Caux Seine has two sensitive natural areas. The first is on the left bank of the Seine, at the Tourbière d’Heurteauville. The second is on the right bank, in the Villequier woods.
The Bois de Villequier overlooks the Seine and its flora and fauna make it a sensitive natural area managed and owned by the Seine Maritime department.
Situated above the picturesque village of Villequier, this wood is characterised by the presence of numerous springs. The wetlands of Villequier Wood are conducive to a rare animal and plant presence.
In this context, numerous ponds account for the presence of certain threatened species of insects as well as amphibians, most notably the spotted salamander.
The natural site of Bois de Villequier overlooks the meandering river and offers pleasant views over the Seine.
Villequier’s history dates back to Roman times. The village also shares a history with Victor Hugo. It was here that his daughter, Léopoldine drowned in the Seine on 4 September 1843. The graves of Léopoldine, her mother and her sister can be seen in the cemetery. On the banks of the Seine, a museum is dedicated to the writer.
