Why thatched cottages in Normandy?

Characteristic of Normandy, thatched cottages are traditional half-timbered houses with thatched roofs that add a special charm to the landscape. Their presence in Normandy is no accident. They reflect local resources and know-how. Wood, which is abundant in the region, is used to build the framework of the houses, known as colombages. Reed stems, abundant in the Seine valley, are used to thatch the roofs. The foundations of these traditional houses are made of flint and limestone blocks found in abundance in the local subsoil.

Driving along this road, you can admire these picturesque private homes, often surrounded by flower gardens.

The “Route des chaumières” takes you on a tour of typical villages such as Vatteville-la-Rue, rich in historical and archaeological heritage, and the Brotonne forest covering more than 6,700 hectares. The tour then leaves the Caux Seine area and continues on to Aizier, a charming little village typical of Normandy; Vieux Port, named after its historic location as a former river port on the Seine; Trouville-la-Haule and Sainte-Opportune-la-Mare; and finally the Marais Vernier nature reserve and Saint-Aubin-sur-Quillebeuf. All these villages are imbued with the peaceful atmosphere of the Normandy countryside.

The route also offers magnificent views of the meandering Seine valley and its chalk cliffs. Whether by car, bike or on foot, the route des chaumières is an invitation to discover and marvel at the natural beauty and authenticity of Normandy.
