A little-known trade, in a place that still often goes unnoticed. And yet, in the 19th century, at the height of the textile industry boom, Bolbec was the ‘Capital of the Vallée d’Or’. So, let’s open the doors to this former factory and retrace the flourishing history of this industry.
Without further ado, we meet these passionate volunteers – former employees in the trade – who bring the entire textile production line back to life for us, with these old machines from the past standing before us.
Along the aisles, they have recreated the entire production line: first of all, we’ll be told the story of cotton processing, where the material extracted from the bale becomes gauze, ribbon, sliver and then yarn. Next, we’ll move on to the stages of weaving. Finally, we’ll discover an area dedicated to printed fabrics known as ‘Indiennes’, which were the driving force behind Bolbec’s development and prosperity.
On the way out, we can even treat ourselves to a handmade textile creation: the famous Bolbec handkerchief, napkins, tablecloths and so on… and the Vichy check fabric made famous by Brigitte Bardot.
