A centuries-old tradition The monks' beer

40 monks make up the community at this abbey, where the only beer brewed by monks in France is produced.

Founded in 649 by Saint Wandrille, the abbey in the Fontenelle valley is one of the oldest witnesses to religious settlement in the Seine valley. It is more commonly known as: the Abbey of Saint-Wandrille.

The Abbey of Saint-Wandrille and its rich heritage

Like many abbeys, its destiny will be made up of more or less prosperous periods. Sold as national property during the French Revolution, the monks returned to the abbey at the end of the 19th century. Let a Benedictine monk guide you through a recently restored Gothic cloister, a wooden-vaulted refectory and an admirable Romanesque chapel: Saint Saturnin. This abbey is a lively place, where the rhythm of the hours is set by Gregorian chant. The current community belongs to the Solesmes congregation and follows the rule of Saint Benedict, according to which you must “live by the work of your hands”. Don’t leave this place without taking a diversion to the shop, which sells unique monastic craft products: beeswax, jams and delicious gingerbread.
The abbey has its own monastic product, Saint-Wandrille beer.

The idea for the beer was launched…

Early in 2015: two brothers were trained and a beerologist taught the art of beer tasting to four brothers with a view to drawing up a set of specifications. For over a year, the brewing brothers developed an original recipe for a French monastic beer. At the same time, other brothers worked on the choice of bottle, the design of the label and the economic and financial aspects of the project.

The brewery was officially inaugurated on 1 December 2016…
The beer is available in the abbey shop and from certain retailers in the region.
