Heurteauville peat bog

Just a stone’s throw from the Seine, in the heart of the valley, nestling in a green setting, lies the Heurteauville peat bog. An exceptional natural environment, owned by the département, where flora and fauna have found an Eden where they can flourish in total freedom.

Let yourself be surprised

This former peat bog, which has not been exploited since 2004, was classified as a sensitive natural area the following year. The ecological role of a peat bog of this type is little known, but it is an important one. Covering 188 hectares, a quarter of which is occupied by a pond, more than 1,500 plant and animal species have found refuge there. Some of them are strictly protected.

Birds are at home here. You can admire white storks, grey herons, boreal tits and even hobby falcons. The plants are not to be outdone, with prehistoric ferns, royal fern and a protected carnivorous plant called Drosera. More exotic still, it’s not uncommon to come across praying mantises, or more rarely, the bloody cricket.

The Heurteauville peat bog has been open to the public since 2021.

Three trails allow you to discover the site:

-“The peat bog and its secrets”
-“The bird trail”
-“Along the course of the marsh”

Trails that come in both observation and educational modes. Information areas and facilities dedicated to birdwatching that explain in detail, but in a very accessible approach, the history of the peat bog and the richness of its biodiversity.
