Heurteauville peat bog

Just a stone’s throw from the Seine, in the heart of the valley, nestled in a green setting, lies the Heurteauville peat bog. An exceptional natural environment, owned by the département, where flora and fauna have found an Eden where they can flourish in total freedom.

Let us surprise you

This former peat bog, which has not been exploited since 2004, was classified as a sensitive natural area the following year. The ecological role of a peat bog of this type is little-known, but important. The 188-hectare site, a quarter of which is occupied by a pond, is home to over 1,500 plant and animal species. Some of them are strictly protected.

Birds are at home here. You can admire white storks, grey herons, boreal tits and even sparrow hawks. Plants are not to be outdone, with prehistoric ferns, royal fern and a protected carnivorous plant called Drosera. More exotic still, it’s not uncommon to come across praying mantises, or more rarely, the bloody cricket.

Since 2021, the Heurteauville peat bog has been open to the public.

Three trails allow you to discover the site:

– The peat bog and its secrets
– The bird trail
– In the course of the marsh

These trails offer both observation and educational options. Information areas and bird-watching facilities explain the history of the peat bog and its rich biodiversity in detail, but in a very accessible way.
